Submission Guidelines

The EcoTheo Review accepts submissions year-round. If you think your work fits with our vision, you can submit your Work to us online. Submissions should comply with our guidelines, and may be returned without review if they do not meet our criteria.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

General
  • Please allow 2-3 months while we review your submissions
  • We do not accept previously published writing, fiction, or poetry.
  • We do accept simultaneous submissions. Please notify us promptly if your work is accepted elsewhere.
  • We publish various types of content including academic articles, book, music and movie reviews, educational materials and curriculums, columns, fiction, narratives, poetry, painting, film, photography, and other visual arts. See below for some specifics for your submission type.
The EcoTheo Review accepts submissions of fiction–including short stories, flash fiction, and novel excerpts.
  • Maximum submission word count is 8,000 words, but we are more likely to publish fiction no longer than 5,000 words.
  • Use a standard word processing format (doc, docx, rtf) and Times New Roman 12-point font.
  • Please include the title, your name, and contact information on the first page of your submission. You are welcome to also include a cover letter.
  • Please send only one submission at a time, and wait for a response before submitting again. If you are submitting flash fiction (fewer than 1,000 words), you are welcome to submit up to three flash pieces within the same document.
  • We recommend you submit 4-6 images of your work for consideration.
  • Each photo should include your name and a brief title or description in the filename, like this: Your name-Painting title.jpg
  • Unsolicited submissions are limited to once every three months.
  • High quality images of your work are requried.
  • All images must be in JPG at least 2048 pixles on one side. Higher resolution is prefered.
  • Please include basic information about the paintings, including the size, medium, or other pertitinent deails. You may also include brief reflections on pieces. Upload a standard word processing file with this information, or add it to the notes section of your submission.

We accept photographs which may be run on their own, or accompany other written content.

  • We recommend you submit 4-6 images for consideration.
  • Each photo should include your name and a brief title or description in the title, like this: Your name-Image title.jpg
  • Unsolicited submissions are limited to once every three months.
  • Original resolution images are preferred. Images must be in JPG at least 2048 pixles on one side.
  • You are encouraged to use metadata to add additional information, otherwise you can attach a text document or other note if needed.

We also look for photographic series and essays.

Photo essays: A set of photographs which will be displayed in a single post with accompanying text to set the scene and context for the reader. The text part of the essay may be more involved, and is suggested to be between aprox. 200 and 500+ words.

Photo series: A set of photographs which are thematic but do not need to be displayed together in a single post. You should include a brief explanation of the theme or idea behind the series (aprox. 100-250 words).

The following applies to both photo essays and series:

  • An essay will usually involve 4-6 images. A series is at least photos, but could be an ongoing project with no upper limit.
  • Each photo should include your name, its sequence in the essay or series, and a brief title or description in the title, like this: Your name-1-Image title.jpg
  • Also submit your accompanying text in the form of a DOC, DOCX or RTF file.
  • Original images are prefered. Images must be in JPG at least 2048 pixles on one side.
  • You are encouraged to use metadata to add additional information, otherwise you can attach a text document or other note if needed.
  • Poets are invited to submit 3-6 poems at a time.

  • Submit poems as a single file. Use a standard word processing format (DOC, DOCX, RTF). Name it as follows: Your full name-Number of poems.docx

  • Include the following at the top of each poem:

    • Title of Poem
    • Author’s name

    • 3-5 Keywords

  • Please use 12pt Times New Roman font.

  • All efforts are made to preserve formatting.

  • Please do not submit more than once every three months.

  • You may submit image suggestions with your poems, but this is not required. Images must be JPG files at least 1050 pixels on one side. Horizontal is prefered. Please name images as follows:Photographer or Artist NAME-Image TITLE or SHORT DESCRIPTION of photo-for TITLE OF POEM.jpg. Include the image name at the top of the corresponding poem.

  • We accept a variety of written work. Here are some examples:
    • Articles
    • Curriculum
    • Educational materials
    • Fiction and nonfiction
    • Op-eds
    • Reviews (book, movie, music, etc.)
    • Sermons
  • Length ranges from 200 to 8,000 words. The average work is around 1,200 words. Quality over length is important. Shorter work may be published on our blog.
  • Use a standard word processing format (DOC, DOCX, RTF). Name the file as follows: “Your Name-Title.doc”
  • Include the following at the top of your submission (before the body text):
    • Title
    • Your name
    • 3-5 descriptive keywords
  • Please use 12 pt Times New Roman font.
  • Please include section headings when possible. These are required for any work over 500 words. These should be bolded.
  • Notes and Citations – Notes and citations should be formatted as endnotes and follow Chicago/Turbian style ‘full citation’ the first time. Subsequent entries should follow ‘shortened citation’. Content will be returned for revision when improper citation is used. Include DOI information when possible. Include links to content when available online.
  • Works Cited and Bibliography – If you relied on materials not cited in footnotes, or would like to direct readers to other relevant materials, you should include a ‘full bibliography‘ following Chicago/Turbian style.
  • Images: You may submit image suggestions with your writing, but this is not required. Please indicate in the body text where you would like the images to be displayed by including the filename. Images must be JPG at least 1050 pixles on one side. Horizontal is prefered. You must have permission to use the image if they are not your own. Please name images as follows: Photographer or Artist-Image Title or Short Description.jpg
